Boosting Online Filing in Canada’s Charitable Sector

Did you know that nearly 80% of charities still file their T3010 Registered Charity Information Return by paper?

Not only does this process take significant time for organizations, but each paper return triggers a costly cycle of manual data entry and error correction for the federal government. With growing demand for better nonprofit data, the sector’s ongoing digital transformation, and a federal expenditure review focused on cutting costs, the urgency to move to online filing has never been greater.

Online filing saves organizations time, improves data accuracy, and strengthens the sector’s knowledge base. Without increased online filing uptake, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) client services for charities may be impacted. We have an opportunity to work with the CRA, dispel myths, remove barriers, and create a smoother, more efficient process that benefits the entire sector.

Imagine Canada, in collaboration with the CRA, is hosting a series of sessions to help charities make the most of online filing. These sessions will explore:

  • Why online filing matters for your organization and the sector as a whole
  • Common barriers to adoption – and practical solutions
  • New options and updates for 2025
  • How online filing can improve data quality, public transparency, and reduce administrative burden.

This information session is relevant for everyone in the sector. From senior leaders, board members, finance staff, and sector partners to other 'amplifiers’ such as people in communications roles, we encourage everyone to attend the session.
