The Imagine Canada Sector Monitor: Charities & the COVID-19 Pandemic details the experiences of charities since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of physical distancing, mandatory closure of non-essential businesses, and myriad other changes to the operating environment.

Charities face billions in lost revenue, drastic service disruption to essential community services and massive layoffs disproportionally impacting women. A worst-case scenario involving six months of enforced isolation, and the more severe economic downturn that would result, means the sector is projected to lose $15.6 billion in revenue and about 194,000 employees.
COVID-19 has impacted charities across the country as they try to pursue their missions amidst dual health and economic crises. Our research shows that 42% of charities have created new programs and 54% have transitioned in-person programs online since the beginning of the pandemic.
Changes have been made to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) to broaden the reach of the program and make it easier for eligible employers, including charities and nonprofits, to access much-needed support during this time of crisis. The following are some significant changes that were made to the CEWS in July, which are effective as of July 5, 2020
