Nonprofit sector must remain strong, especially in time of economic turmoil
As every Canadian citizen, we are deeply concerned about the consequences of the tariffs on our economy. While how long the situation may last or the extent of its impact is uncertain at this time, there is no doubt that the days ahead will be difficult for many Canadians as long as the tariffs remain in effect. Today, we stand strong, united and resolute with the workers and communities that already are or might be impacted by the trade war.
Our sector is known to be the social net that holds our communities together. We have heard from organizations that are understandably concerned about the situation and the ripple effect on our sector. Charities and nonprofits provide essential and crucial services to millions of individuals every day. Disruption to the country’s economic stability affects our sector, as more individuals find themselves in need of assistance and support. If tariffs continue, an anticipated surge in demand for services will come at the time when a decline in donations and corporate support seems highly probable.
As the government is planning economic-relief measures, we will continue our advocacy work to ensure charities and nonprofits have the resources and support they need to help impacted Canadians. We call on the federal government to work together, as partners, to protect our communities by ensuring the nonprofit sector remains strong as the situation unfolds. We also urge companies to protect their community investment budgets and resist the impulse to make cuts should their businesses be affected. We are confident that our colleagues in the foundation community will find ways to support the sector as demand increases.
Canadians are known for their resilience, but also their generosity, especially during difficult times. If you can afford to, consider donating time or money to a local nonprofit organization in your community.
