Equity as a Practice: From Audits to Action

This workshop introduces Equity as a Practice, an approach to equity work that moves beyond checklists and audits toward sustained action.

How can your organization meaningfully assess its equity practices - and turn those insights into real, lasting change?

This workshop, led by Saltwater Learning and Consulting Group, introduces Equity as a Practice, an approach to equity work that moves beyond checklists and audits toward sustained, reflective action. The session is grounded in the Equity Audit Guide, a practical resource created by Saltwater Learning and Consulting Group in collaboration with Imagine Canada as part of the Equity Benchmarking Project - a national initiative funded by Scotiabank.

Drawing on findings from Canada’s first of its kind national survey of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practices in the nonprofit sector, this session will guide participants through key concepts, tools, and reflective exercises from the resource using five guiding steps.

Participants will learn how to design and carry out an equity audit in their organization - whether large or small - and use the findings to develop meaningful, sustainable plans for change.

Through practical examples, reflective questions, and case studies, the workshop will explore:

  • What an equity audit is (and what it isn’t)
  • How to approach equity as an ongoing, adaptive practice rather than a one-time project
  • Steps and tools to assess your organization’s systems, culture, and relationships
  • Ways to ensure the audit process itself is equitable, trauma-informed, and accountable
  • Strategies to move from audits to tangible, structural action

This interactive session is designed for nonprofit and charitable leaders, equity practitioners, and anyone seeking to embed equity into their organization’s everyday work.
