What does it take to create an equity working group that drives meaningful, lasting change - not just another committee that loses momentum?
In this workshop, Saltwater Learning and Consulting Group will introduce Building Together: Equity Working Groups, a practical guide developed for Imagine Canada as part of the Equity Benchmarking Project - a national initiative funded by Scotiabank.
Drawing on lessons from Canada’s first of its kind national survey of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practices in the nonprofit sector, this session will help organizations explore how to establish, resource, and sustain equity working groups that are both strategic and grounded in care.
Participants will gain tools and strategies to:
- Define clear goals and mandates for an equity working group
- Clarify roles, decision-making authority, and accountability structures
- Build a diverse and empowered team with the right skills and perspectives
- Navigate common challenges such as “getting stuck,” managing conflict, or balancing power dynamics
- Foster collaboration, trust, and reflection while avoiding burnout
The session will also explore the paradoxes inherent in equity work - like balancing urgency with patience, structure with flexibility, and safety with discomfort - and offer concrete approaches to keep your organization moving forward, even when the work gets hard.
