Government Relations and Membership Specialist

The Government Relations and Membership Specialist will be responsible for the maintenance, execution and evaluation of Imagine Canada’s federal government relations (GR) program and activities. Reporting to the Director of Advocacy & Knowledge Mobilization, the individual will inform the organization’s overall GR strategy, identify and manage short-term plans to influence government decision making, coordinate and conduct meetings, track follow-up, and interact regularly with political and departmental staff. They will also manage key aspects of the engagement of members in the organization’s public policy agenda and the Public Policy Team’s activities, including Hill Day, regular advocacy campaign efforts and other strategic pursuits. The specialist will work closely with the Public Policy Team and other teams across the organization to deliver on one of Imagine Canada’s strategic priorities of influencing the environment in which nonprofits and charities are best able to serve their communities.
Government relations (GR) activities:
- Work with the Public Policy Team towards the development and implementation of sector-facing GR strategy and quarterly plans. Manage program activities in timely and responsive alignment with government and policy cycles.
- Contribute to the monitoring of legislative, policy and regulatory activity that may affect the nonprofit sector. Both lead and contribute to the drafting of knowledge products, consultation submissions and official correspondence with GR targets.
- Hold regular meetings with federal officials, either alone or alongside other team members, including the President & CEO.
- Advance select policy priorities in accordance with Imagine Canada’s public policy agenda; support the advancement of reactive and proactive policy files led by other team members.
- Ensure government relations meetings, town halls are planned, prepared, executed and concluded in accordance with policy file-specific advocacy strategies and in support of the team's quarterly targets.
- Support and lead development of both regular and ad hoc communications (MailChimp campaigns, direct messaging, government cycle outputs, KMb materials), manage delivery to GR targets; management and lead curator of Imagine’s regular e-newsletter to Members of Parliament.
- Regular tracking of the team’s government relations activities and updating of the Lobby Registry.
- Regular proactive outreach and positive relationship building with government contacts, including political staff, politicians, and civil servants.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with sector colleagues outside of Imagine Canada, particularly among Imagine Canada’s membership.
- Annual Hill Day execution, and other creative opportunities to directly engage members in government relations activities.
- Relationship building with members where our policy and GR interests align. Work with other team members to build policy alignment among and with members where possible.
- Seek to gain and maintain knowledge of members’ priorities, supporting engagement of these stakeholders in the development and advancement of Imagine Canada’s policy agenda.
- Work with the Public Policy Team to execute advocacy campaigns; inform and support the Early Alert program with a membership lens.
- Attend events as a representative of Imagine Canada.
- Undertake select government relations capacity-building activities for nonprofit sector organizations. These may include toolkits, how-to webinars, and blog posts.
- Working with the Public Policy team and Digital Experience team, draft updates and communications for the public policy section of Imagine Canada’s website.
- Strong command of English language.
- 3-5 years experience in either public policy development, advocacy or government relations.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Understanding of the environment in which Canadian charities and nonprofits operate and appreciation of the diversity of Canada’s charitable and nonprofit sector.
- A university degree in political science, political management, public administration, social science, or a related discipline.
- Advanced knowledge of Parliamentary institutions, federal government departments, and the federal decision-making process.
- Resourceful and risk tolerant self-starter attitude with the ability to adapt and multi-task in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to write compelling copy in a multitude of mediums; strategic communications experience an asset.
- Willingness to travel.
- Experience working for a charity or a public-benefit nonprofit.
- Experience with federal advocacy and networked organizations.
- Bilingualism (French and English) considered an asset.
