Research Associate - 12 Month Contract

Join Imagine Canada as a Research Associate and be a part of a dynamic, talented team of people working to support the charitable and nonprofit sector. We are looking for an individual with experience managing and conducting qualitative research projects and a demonstrated ability to communicate research findings in creative ways to various audiences. 

About the project: As one of the partners of the federal government’s Investment Readiness Program 2.0, Imagine Canada will conduct a series of case studies that illustrate the ways in which social finance tools are or have been utilized by charities and nonprofits. 

Reporting to the Vice-President, Research & Strategic Relationships, the Research Associate will be responsible for executing this research and knowledge mobilization project, which is intended to inform charities and nonprofits about the social finance market: e.g., applicability as a resourcing tool; relationship to organizational operations and revenue profiles; measurement and communication of social impact and financial returns; clarity on barriers and how these can be overcome; applicability and use of different social finance instruments to varying contexts, organizational needs, and mission areas. 

The Research Associate will also carry out knowledge mobilization activities in broad support of the Investment & Readiness Program, working with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) other program partners to leverage their work and networks and expand their reach throughout the charitable and nonprofit sector.

The expected results of this project are greater understanding of how social finance mechanisms apply to charities and nonprofits and how these tools can lead to greater organizational independence, and sustainability. 

Responsibilities
  • Conduct a literature review and environmental scan of recent scholarship and materials on social finance, particularly related to the charitable and nonprofit sector.
  • Conduct interviews and focus groups with social finance experts and representatives of charities and nonprofits that have pursued social financing and related tools or models.
  • Develop a report and other knowledge products (e.g., infographics, fact sheets, presentations) to share research results with various audiences including sector leaders, social finance professionals and government policymakers.
  • Develop an evaluation plan for the project, collect relevant data and prepare a final project report for ESDC.
  • Work collaboratively with ESDC and other program partners to communicate information about the Investment Readiness Program to charities and nonprofits. 
  • Represent Imagine Canada at convenings, events, webinar panels and media opportunities relating to this project. 
 
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Experience with case study approaches, interviewing, focus groups and other qualitative research methods
  • Experience with transcription and qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with knowledge mobilization/transfer strategies
  • Experience communicating research results to non-academic audiences
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit sector and/or social finance considered an asset 
  • Bilingualism (French and English) considered an asset

Terms & Conditions
  • Term of Employment: 12 month contract as an employee of Imagine Canada
  • Salary range: $70,000-82,500 
  • Location: Canada, location flexible. 
  • Working hours: Normally 35 hours per week. Flexible working hours to accommodate personal and family commitments.
