Imagine Canada’s 360 blog is our platform to provide those who work in and support the charitable sector with information that is current and insightful with compelling thought leadership pieces and practical how-to feature articles. As a guest writer you have the opportunity to share your know-how and insights with charity and nonprofit leaders and practitioners.
We want our readers to view our blog as a credible source of information with tools to support their organizations and their individual roles. Each blog post should provide applicable advice, perspectives or guidance.
Please review the editorial guidelines below before submitting your blog post idea via email to Émilie Pontbriand (firstname.lastname@example.org). Please include the following information:
- Your name, title, and organization)
- Topic you wish to cover and a short summary of your idea
- Type of blog post you wish to write (e.g., thought leadership, how-to, news, etc.)
- The key takeaway message (or messages) of your piece
- Has your piece been previously published or will the content be repurposed/adapted from an existing post? If so, please provide the link.
Once your topic has been approved, we will discuss publication date as it relates to our editorial calendar, timing considerations related to topic and other Imagine Canada priorities.
Blog post drafts are to be submitted at least one month prior to publishing to allow for editorial review and French language translation. Along with your submission, send us a short 60 word bio and a recent photo of yourself.
- Articles must be written with the needs of those who lead, work in and support the sector in mind. This includes:
- Executive directors of charities and nonprofits
- Board members
- Other nonprofit staff (fundraisers, marketing and communications professionals, public policy practitioners, program delivery staff, volunteer managers, researchers, etc.)
- Sector supporters (foundations, grantmakers, corporate community investment professionals, etc.)
Topics and Types of Posts
Imagine Canada’s blog features the following types of posts:
- Thought-leadership: opinion editorial in style (example)
- How-to: practical pieces to guide readers through a process (example)
- Commentary: charitable and nonprofit sector related commentary or stories on current events (example)
- Q&A: interview with a sector expert on a specific topic (example)
- Different points of view: debate style dialogue about a particular issue (example)
- Case study: how an organization has strengthened its practices (example)
- Listicle: content presented wholly or partly in the form of a list (example)
We encourage a broad range topics relevant to our audiences, but specifically we look for content that covers:
- board governance
- economic issues
- financial accountability and transparency
- fundraising best-practices
- foundations and grantmaking
- giving and donation trends
- human resources and staff management
- impact and effectiveness
- legal issues
- nonprofit marketing communications
- organizational leadership and culture
- public policy and government relations
- research and evaluation
- volunteerism and volunteer management
- corporate giving and sponsorship
Our goal is to provide content and perspectives that are applicable and relatable to the broad charitable and nonprofit sector. Submissions that are too specific to a cause, issue or sub-sector may not be accepted.
Write headlines with a goal of drawing in traffic and generating social media sharing (short is better). Headlines that are specific about what the reader can expect in the post often trumps creative yet vague titles. We can help you with that and your headline might be reviewed/modified before posting.
Style and formatting
In order to provide compelling content to our audiences, the structure and format of a piece can make or break the depth of understanding of a particular topic. In addition to being informative, posts should use clear and concise language and be written with “scannability” in mind, this includes:
- Word count of 500 to 1000
- Write using short sentences and brief paragraphs
- Break up large blocks of text with headings and subheadings
- Bullet your major points where possible
Linking and Source Attribution
With our blog goal of being a credible source of information, it is important to support data, research claims and other key information. This can be done with hyperlinking your content to its online source.
While we do encourage links to outside blogs and websites that support the content or issue being discussed, guest posts may not be advertorial in nature. (*If you are interested in advertising with us, please scroll down to the Sponsored Content section of this page). Please keep the following in mind:
- Guest bloggers from charities and nonprofits can link to your organization’s website in your author bio and, if relevant, in the body of the post.
- Guest bloggers from businesses or elsewhere can link to your company’s website in your author bio and, if relevant, in the body of the post.
- Internal linking to other Imagine Canada blog posts and website content is encouraged and appreciated.
Imagine Canada will choose the feature image to accompany each post. You may also include other images (photos and charts) as long as you hold the copyright and/or can provide proof that the image is royalty-free. If the image requires credit, please provide the necessary sourcing information so it can be attributed properly.
Content Review Process
For quality control and consistency Imagine Canada will review all submissions prior to publishing. If revisions are required, the draft will be returned to you with comments to be reviewed again prior to posting. In most cases it is to address the structure of the post, clarity and conciseness.
What we can’t post
While we encourage our guest bloggers to share their points-of-view we will not publish content:
- That is partisan in nature. According to guidance from the CRA, as a registered charity Imagine Canada cannot feature partisan statements or positions on our online properties, even if there is a “guest contributor disclaimer”.
- That may be considered promotional in nature that highlights the benefits of one specific product or service over others, unless an advertising fee has been paid. (*Please scroll down to the Sponsored Content section of this page to learn more. Such content must still adhere to our guidelines, and will be marked as ‘Sponsored Content’.)
- Deemed to be hateful or disrespectful of individuals, organizations, or causes.
Republishing your article and copyright
Although there are some exceptions, we typically only feature content that has not been previously published. Original content written by our guest writers and published on our blog may be repurposed elsewhere with the following stipulations:
- That there is a two-week window between the time your blog post goes live on the Imagine Canada website and the time it is published on another site.
- All subsequent publications of your post cite Imagine Canada as the original source and provide a link to the original article.
- Imagine Canada does not provide monetary compensation for guest blogger articles. Authors are compensated by exposure to Imagine Canada audiences via our web properties and social networks.

Imagine Canada publishes a limited number of sponsored posts on its 360 Blog. A blog post promoting a service, discount opportunity, toolkit, resource, product, etc. is considered advertorial in nature and must be submitted as sponsored content. Paid content is subject to editorial guidelines and other conditions.
- Content must be relevant to Imagine Canada’s audience and the sector.
- All sponsored blog posts will be marked as sponsored content when published.
- Sponsored blog posts have a 500 word maximum limit.
- Content of sponsored blog posts must be “evergreen”
