Imagine Canada, the national umbrella for Canada’s charitable and nonprofit sector, reacts to the federal government’s announcement concerning the political activities of charities.
“This announcement from the Ministries of Finance and National Revenue represents real progress for the charitable sector,” stated Bruce MacDonald, President & CEO of Imagine Canada.
“The announcement of the government’s willingness to broaden the environment in which charities can engage in the public policy process was a significant component of the recommendations of the Consultation Panel on the Political Activities of Charities. We look forward to a more substantial response related to the government’s commitment to modernize the legislative framework for charities and nonprofits, as contained in their mandate letters, and to the other items contained in the panel’s report.”
The announcement also indicates that the government will be appealing the decision of Justice Morgan in Canada Without Poverty v. AG Canada. We are currently reviewing the language of the appeal to fully understand the relationship between Charter issues and policy initiatives.
